About Commercial Alumni Pages
A statement about fee based alumni pages purporting to serve East High Alumni

from The East High Alumni Page

An East alumnus wrote us and asked:

Q. What is this all about? A web page banner for "East High School Alumni Archive" Is someone else trying to horn in on the East High Alumni web page?  Is this authorized by the people who have worked so hard to get the web page where it is today?

This looks bogus to me and a way for someone to make money.  Should others be “warned?”

A. We do not understand why any East High School or East Elementary School (of Memphis, Tennessee) alumnus familiar with The East High Alumni Page (www.EastHigh.org) would need any other alumni web page. If there is some service we are missing, please let us know. Generally, we think we offer more services than these commercial outfits at no cost to our fellow alumni.

What is this all about?
The "Memphis East High School Alumni Archive" is a fee based alumni service provided by a firm which offers this commercial service to many high school alumni around the country. Through smart promotion, they have obtained domain names such that it can appear that this is a service for one high school, our school in this case. Similar to classmates.com, this outfit apparently offers free sign up, but to get contact information or to send a message to a fellow classmate, one has to pay a fee and join.

Is someone else trying to horn in on the East High Alumni web page?
They are trying to get money from our fellow alumni for services that are free here. To the extent this outfit fools any of our fellow alumni into joining it and not participating with The East High Alumni Page we would think it is a disservice to East High School alumni. These commercial outfits likely have no sincere connection to us other than a sincere desire for our money.

Is this authorized by the people who have worked so hard to get the web page where it is today?
It is not authorized and, of course, it needs no authorization from us to do business. Again, to the extent it draws alumni and resources away from The East High Alumni Page, it can devalue the 13 years work that has been put into our free alumni page, "The East High Alumni Page."

This looks bogus to me and a way for someone to make money.
It is exactly that, an effort by someone to make money. Nothing wrong with making money, but there is no need at this point for this commercial service for alumni of East High School and East Elementary School in Memphis. The East High Alumni Page has provided these services to fellow alumni for more than 13 years for free. If someone wants to pay for these services, we'll take the donation.  <grin>

Should others be “warned?”
To the extent they should be, we hope with this page, they are.
