Mrs. Hallie H. James was assigned to East Elementary when the school opened in 1948. Each of the faculty members for the new school were specially selected to provide the highest quality educational experience in the school system. In addition to her regular teaching duties, Mrs. James also was sponsor of the Safety Patrol, overseeing their selection and training, as well as its work each school day. Mrs. James was still at her 6th grade teachers desk at least through the mid 1960s. She died in Memphis April 13, 1999, at the age of 94. An obituary is available.
